Joanna Weakley: Founder of Holistic Silk
Celebrating Joanna Weakley: Founder of Holistic Silk — A Visionary Businesswoman for International Women’s Day
For International Women’s Day, we celebrate Joanna Weakley, an inspiring founder, creative visionary, and true pioneer of luxury wellbeing design. Joanna started Holistic Silk back in 1999 at her kitchen table with the help of a Prince’s Trust Loan, driven by a desire to create beautiful, functional products that support calm, sleep and wellbeing in an increasingly stressful world. More than 26 years later, Holistic Silk is a beloved global brand with a loyal community and a deeply ethical, design‑led philosophy.
A Creative Beginning Shaped by Global Influences
The youngest of four siblings, Joanna grew up in a busy household and spent her childhood between the UK, Portugal and Hong Kong. Her time in Asia left a lasting impression, influencing not only her artistic style but her appreciation for Eastern philosophies, natural therapies and mindful living — threads that now run through every Holistic Silk design.
A love of art and textiles led Joanna to the Chelsea School of Art, where she gained her BA in Textile Design. After graduating, she worked as a freelance designer and later as a buyer at the UK’s first “Walk In Back Rub” Shiatsu space in London. Here, she saw firsthand how modern life — from hours spent at desks to constant business travel — was taking a toll on people’s minds and bodies.
The Lightbulb Moment: Beauty Meets Wellness
During her early career, Joanna often sourced eye pillows for yoga, stress relief and insomnia. At the time, choices were limited and often unattractive — loud tie‑dye colours and cheaply made fabrics — but Joanna was already convinced of their benefits.
A move into the natural and organic beauty sector later illuminated a major gap in the market: beautiful, comforting, functional wellbeing products simply didn’t exist. They were either clinical, uninspiring, or not made to last. This realisation sparked a powerful idea: What if she combined alternative medicine, natural therapies and good sleep — and made them truly beautiful?

The Birth of Holistic Silk (1999)
With her research background, textile expertise and passion for natural health, Joanna created the first Holistic Silk product in 1999: the Lavender Eye Pillow — elegant, effective, and unlike anything available at the time.
Customer feedback and deeper research into ancient and modern therapies helped shape the rest of the collection: sleep masks, beauty tools, relaxation accessories and ergonomic designs that feel indulgent yet deliver real results.
Holistic Silk quickly attracted a global following, including admirers such as Lisa Eldridge, Salma Hayek and Sienna Miller. Joanna’s distinctive approach has remained the brand’s hallmark: ancient wisdom, textile mastery, aesthetic beauty and practical benefits — all stitched together with love, intention and purpose.
Ethics, Craft and Community at the Heart of the Brand
Since day one, Joanna has prioritised ethical craftsmanship over mass production. Holistic Silk pieces are made in small batches by skilled artisan makers in the UK and by a long‑standing NGO partner in India.
For more than 20 years, Holistic Silk has collaborated with the Help Foundation, a respected NGO that trains women in textile and craft skills, supports female entrepreneurship, provides health, financial and educational programmes, and uplifts communities through long‑term, ethical employment.
This commitment ensures each product is not only beautiful and functional, but also socially meaningful.

A Commitment to Sustainability
Long before sustainability became fashionable, Joanna believed in creating products that last — not landfill. Holistic Silk has dramatically reduced its packaging, with only one product now containing single‑use packaging. All other items are packaged solely in reusable organza storage bags, and any printed materials included are fully recyclable.
Joanna’s mantra is simple: Use less, waste less, create better.
A Design Philosophy Born from Heart and Purpose
Every Holistic Silk product is still designed exclusively by Joanna, with her latest sleep mask collection beginning with her own watercolour artwork. Lavender — known for its calming, sleep‑enhancing properties — is thoughtfully incorporated across the collection.
Her goal has remained unchanged: to create luxurious, effective wellness tools that fit seamlessly into busy modern lives, helping to counter stress, overwhelm and lack of sleep.
Joanna’s design principles also remain the same: everything she creates must be beautiful, functional, easy to use with no preparation, grounded in time‑honoured therapies and made to last.

Q&A with Joanna Weakley
What are your favourite relaxation tips?
I always encourage people to reconnect with nature whenever they can — it is one of the most grounding and restorative things we can do. Mindful breathing is also incredibly powerful; a few deep breaths and long, slow exhalations can reset your whole body when life feels fast-paced.
I try to take short breaks throughout the day to release tension in my shoulders and neck, and I always keep calming tools nearby, such as lavender eye pillows or facial mists, for a quick reset. At Holistic Silk, we even created our own mini “Office Spa” with facial rollers, eye pillows, massaging chair cushions and a garden space where we can take mindful breaks. It really does make a difference.
What are your beauty secrets?
Never skipping a cleanse is essential for me, and I always give myself a gentle facial massage when applying serums and creams at night — it keeps skin elasticity at its best.
I’m also rarely without my frankincense facial mist; the Neal’s Yard one has become a bit of an addiction, and you’ll find them all over my house. And of course, I believe wholeheartedly in Beauty Sleep. A silk pillowcase and silk eye mask not only support deeper, undisturbed rest but nourish and protect your skin and hair while you sleep.
What is your nighttime ritual?
I like to wind down with a large mug of chamomile tea and a good book. I never take my phone to bed — even when not in use, the blue light can really disrupt your sleep quality.
I love a hot water bottle for comfort, especially in the colder months. Wherever I am, I always pack my silk pillowcase and my eye mask. Even if I don’t fall asleep wearing it, I keep it on my head so that when I stir in the night, I can pull it down and drift straight back to sleep. Honestly, it’s the best thing I’ve ever designed.
Tell us about your yoga practice.
I first practised yoga in India and instantly connected with what it stood for — the grounding, the breath, the sense of presence. Later, when yoga became more mainstream in London during the late ’90s, it felt natural to weave that passion into my early Holistic Silk designs, including the Yoga Rug Mat which is still part of our collection today.
Even with a busy life running a business and raising a family, I turn to the 5 Tibetan Rites. They’re simple yet transformative, helping me stay centred and energised. I keep a Yoga Rug Mat in almost every room (and even in the boot of my car!) so I can take a moment to decompress whenever I need it.
What changes would you like to see in sustainability and the future of materials?
I would love to see a much stronger focus on high‑quality materials that truly last. We also need to dramatically reduce our reliance on plastic in every area of life. Our grandparents reused veg bags and bread packets, and I think we should return to that mindset — thoughtful, multi‑use packaging as standard.
Resource‑conscious design and production must become a priority, as well as long‑term support for local and global communities through ethical manufacturing. At Holistic Silk, this philosophy guides everything we do and continues to shape our future.
What is your life motto?
I would like to say it is something truly inspirational and deep, but it really is simple: “Sink or Swim.”
